Hillstomp
Portland Oregon junkbox blues duo HILLSTOMP is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works. $5 |

Matt Lewis Band
On the band's self-titled release, Lewis unleashed rapid-fire vocals over reggae and acoustic funk numbers that sometimes reach a ferocity that emanates Lewis' punk upbringing. But for the most part, that 2004 record (of which they've sold 5,000-plus copies all on their own) is reminiscent of a cross of early O.A.R. (when they were still an acoustic roots rock band) but with G. Love at the helm. $5 |

The Gourds
Since the band started defining Gourds Music, as it has come to be known, with Dem's Good Beeble in 1997 and the quirky Stadium Blitzer in 1998, they have chugged through America fueled by music and a near-pathological need for a good time. And while songwriters Kevin Russell and Jimmy Smith have written the most dense, reference-laden country songs of the last 10 years and almost single-handedly made a place for deep thought in a genre of "Honky Tonk Badonkadonks" they have, for the most part, shied away from the tear-in-my-beer ballads that made country music a commercial powerhouse over the last 50 years. $15 |

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
Like a Super Nova burning bright in the night sky comes Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. Based out of San Diego, KDTU began its journey in 1998 after bandleader Karl Denson decided to change gears five years after he'd help create The Greyboy Allstars. GBA had proven themselves as the ultimate party band, spreading their "West Coast Boogaloo" style all over the world, making "Jazz" a dance term once again. Karl set out to take this formula to the next level by putting more emphasis on vocals and adding some funk, R&B and hip hop elements. |
